Lizzie Majchrzak — Service Dog Training Specialist

“At 12 years old, I developed a rare autoimmune disorder that changed my life. Working with a service dog didn’t just help me manage my condition — it showed me what was possible. That experience is why I do this work. When you come to me, I’m not just your trainer. I’m someone who has been where you are.”

Lizzie leads all service dog training at Clever Canine. Her personal experience with service dogs gives her a perspective that goes far beyond technique — she understands the daily challenges, the emotional weight, and the profound difference the right dog can make in a person’s life.

How It Works

Our Approach to Service Dog Training

Service dog training is not a product you purchase. It’s a lifelong partnership you build — between you, your dog, and us. Here’s how we build it together.

1
Service Dog Application — No Cost, No Obligation
Everything starts with the application. It takes about 10 minutes and helps us understand your situation and whether we can help. If we can, we schedule a free 15-minute discovery call. If we’re not the right fit, we don’t leave you empty-handed — we connect you with resources and organizations that may be able to help.
Start Your Application →
2
Custom Training Plan Built Around You
Everything we learn in the discovery call shapes your dog’s training plan. We build it around your specific disability, your daily life, and the tasks that will make the most real-world difference. If you don’t yet have a dog, we can help guide you in finding and selecting the right one.
3
Training (12–24 Months) & a Lifelong Partnership
The active training phase typically takes 12–24 months, building skills progressively as your dog matures. But the partnership doesn’t end there. We are with you for the long haul — questions, new challenges, behavior that needs refreshing — whatever comes up, we’re here.
4
Public Access Training & Lifelong Advocacy
Public access training is woven throughout the entire program — your dog learns to perform reliably in stores, restaurants, medical facilities, and transportation. And as part of our lifelong partnership, we remain a resource for public access issues, denial of access situations, and anything else that comes up after training is complete. You are never on your own.
Know Your Rights

The service dog world is complex. The law is on your side — but knowing how to exercise your rights, and what to do when they’re violated, is something most trainers never address. We do.

This is a rare differentiator — most dog trainers train dogs. We train you, your dog, and prepare you to navigate the world confidently together.

Before You Apply

Is Our Program the Right Fit?

We want to work with the right people — and we want to be honest when we can’t help. Read this before applying.

This is a strong fit if:
  • You have a qualifying disability under the ADA that substantially limits a major life activity
  • You need a dog trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate your disability — not companionship or emotional support alone
  • You are in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, or the Great Lakes region and can travel to Waterford, MI for training sessions
  • You understand this is a 12–24 month commitment that requires your active participation
  • For Full & Signature programs: your dog is a Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, or Standard Poodle between 8 weeks and 5 months of age (or you need guidance selecting one)
We are probably not the right fit if:
  • You are looking for an emotional support animal letter, registration, or certification only
  • You need a fully trained dog delivered to you without your ongoing participation in the training process
  • Your dog is outside the breed or age parameters for Full or Signature programs — the Train Your Own program may still be an option for you
  • You are outside our service area and unable to travel to Waterford, MI for training sessions

If we’re not the right fit, we won’t leave you without options. We maintain connections with other organizations in Michigan and nationally and will do our best to point you toward someone who can help.

For the Full Service Dog and Signature Service Dog programs, we primarily work with Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and Standard Poodles. Great Danes and Newfoundlands are accepted for mobility tasks only. Because service dog training takes 12–24 months, dogs must be between 8 weeks and 5 months of age to be accepted into these programs. All other breeds and ages are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The Train Your Own program has no breed or age restrictions.
Yes — the Signature program is built around your dog. Not every dog is a good candidate for service dog work (temperament, health, and drive matter), which is something we assess early in our process. If your dog meets the breed and age requirements and is a good fit, we build the training program around them. If your dog is outside those parameters, the Train Your Own program may be the right path.
Typically 12–24 months, depending on the tasks required, the dog’s age and aptitude, and the complexity of your needs. Service dog training is thorough by necessity — your dog needs to be reliable in all public environments, under all conditions, every time. We don’t rush the process.
Many breeds can become excellent service dogs — it depends more on the individual dog’s temperament, health, and trainability than the breed alone. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Standard Poodles are common choices, but we work with a wide range of breeds. We’ll assess your dog’s suitability during our consultation.
Under the ADA, service dogs in the United States are not required to be certified, registered, or wear a vest. What matters is that the dog is trained to perform specific tasks related to your disability. We can discuss voluntary certifications that may be useful in certain situations, and we make sure you understand your rights completely.
Denial of access is illegal in most circumstances under the ADA. We prepare you for these situations before they happen — what to say, how to handle it calmly, and when to escalate. We also connect clients with legal resources and disability advocacy organizations in Michigan who can help if needed.
Training takes place at our facility at 4396 Dixie Hwy #3 in Waterford, MI and in real-world public environments as your dog progresses. Public access training — stores, restaurants, medical facilities, transportation — is an essential part of service dog preparation. We train where life actually happens.
