You're Not a Bad Dog Owner. The Approach Just Wasn't Right for Your Dog.

Almost everyone who calls us has already tried. They have watched the videos, bought the harness, read conflicting advice from six directions, and practiced something faithfully for a month that did not work. By the time they reach out, the story they are telling themselves is usually that they failed their dog.

That is almost never what happened. What usually happened is that the advice was written for a different dog, or it skipped the steps between where your dog is and where the advice assumed they were. Once the approach matches the dog in front of you, progress tends to come faster than people expect.

How We Can Help

Training Programs

Six programs, each built for a different problem. Not sure which one fits? That is exactly what the discovery call is for.

For dogs 6 months & younger

Puppy Training

The window that matters most closes around sixteen weeks. We build the foundation — house training, crate comfort, bite inhibition, and real socialization that is not just “meeting lots of dogs.”

For dogs 6 months & older

Dog Training

One-on-one work for the problems that make daily life hard: pulling on leash, ignoring you outside, losing it at the door, reacting to other dogs. Built around your household, not a generic curriculum.

Obedience, AKC & Dog Sports

Group Training Classes

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, Obedience 1 through 4, and Agility. Small groups — six to eight dogs — because practicing around other dogs only works if your dog can still think while they do it.

Professional Preparation

Service Dog Training

Task-specific training for handlers who need a dog that works. A long road, done properly, with honest conversations about whether a particular dog is suited to it.

Therapy Dog Training

For dogs headed into hospitals, schools and reading programs — where steadiness around strangers, equipment and noise is the whole job.

Safe & Comfortable Care

Overnight Boarding

Boarding with people who know dogs. Structure stays in place while you are away, so you are not undoing two weeks of work when you get home.

Our Proprietary System

The Canine Connection Compass™

Most training fails for the same reason: it teaches a dog to perform commands without ever addressing the relationship those commands sit inside. The Canine Connection Compass™ is the framework Mandy built over ten years of training dogs here in Metro Detroit, and it rests on four pillars that hold each other up.

Relationship pillar
Relationship
Impulse Control pillar
Impulse Control
Communication pillar
Communication
Boundaries pillar
Boundaries

Pull one pillar out and the other three start to wobble. A dog who cannot regulate themselves in a parking lot cannot learn in one either, and a cue only works once it is a promise you keep. That is why we look at all four before recommending a program.

Why We Get Results

Why Metro Detroit Families Choose Clever Canine

Most trainers fall into one of two traps: chasing quick results while ignoring your dog's personality, or being so committed to one method they miss what would actually work. We do neither — and you can read what that has looked like for other families in our success stories.

You work with the same trainers throughout

Mandy Majchrzak is our founder and head trainer, with ten years of working with dogs across Metro Detroit. You are not handed off to whoever is available this week.

Small group sizes

Six to eight dogs, two certified trainers. Enough other dogs to make the practice real, few enough that your dog is not just surviving the hour.

We tell you when we are not the answer

Some dogs need a veterinary behaviorist. Some need medical work ruled out first. We would rather say so on a fifteen-minute call than sell you a package that was never going to work.

Every breed, every age

Puppies, adolescents, rescue dogs with histories nobody can fully explain, and senior dogs learning something new. None of it is unusual here.

A real facility, not just in-home visits

Our Waterford location means your dog practices in a space built for training, then takes it home — which is where it has to work.

Common Questions

Common Questions From Metro Detroit Dog Owners

It depends on what your dog needs, which is why we do not quote a number before we have talked. Group classes run four to six weekly sessions. One-on-one work is priced by program. The discovery call is free and you will leave it knowing the actual range for your situation rather than a headline price that changes later.
Usually, yes — and the first thing we do is work out what is actually driving it. A dog who lunges because they desperately want to say hello needs a different plan from one who lunges because they are frightened and trying to create space. Both look the same on the end of a leash. They are not the same problem. We wrote up how we separate the two in our guide to leash reactivity.
Sooner than most people think. The socialization window is largely closed by around sixteen weeks, and what happens before then shapes how your dog reads the world for the rest of their life. You do not need to wait for a full vaccination series to start — you need to be thoughtful about where and how.
Both happen, depending on the program. Group classes run at our Waterford facility. Some one-on-one work starts at home, because that is where the problem lives — a dog who mugs guests at the door has to practice at that door. We will tell you which makes sense on the call.
No. Older dogs often learn faster than adolescents, because they settle more easily and have longer attention spans. What takes longer is replacing a habit that has had years of practice — but “longer” is not “impossible,” and we see it work regularly.
Start by giving them less freedom than feels generous, and give it back as they earn it. Most of the problems we see with new rescue dogs come from too much freedom too fast — it comes from love, but a dog who does not yet know the rules cannot be handed the whole house on day one. There is a fuller walkthrough in bringing home a shelter dog: the first two weeks.
You tell us what is going on and we ask questions. Fifteen minutes, free, by phone or video. At the end you will know what we think is happening with your dog and which program fits — or that you need something we do not offer, which we will also say plainly.
