Who Agility Fundamentals Is For

Prerequisite Open to current Clever Canine Dog Training clients or with instructor approval. Dogs must demonstrate basic obedience: sit, down, stay, and place commands.

Your dog knows the basics and has energy to spare. You're looking for something more than the same walk around the block — something that challenges both of you, deepens your bond, and genuinely leaves your dog happy and tired.

Run, Jump, Conquer is the right class if:

  • Your dog has solid basic obedience and you're ready for something new
  • You want a fun activity you and your dog can do together — not just more commands
  • Your dog has high energy and you want to channel it productively
  • You're curious about competitive agility but want to try it first
  • You want to watch your dog light up and conquer something genuinely challenging
  • You're looking for a full mental and physical workout that actually tires them out
No special equipment, experience, or athletic background required — for you or your dog. People of all ages and physiques take and enjoy this class.

More than just tricks

What Agility Does for Your Dog — and Your Relationship

A standard walk engages maybe 20% of your dog's potential. Agility engages all of it — body, mind, instinct, and the bond between dog and handler. Here's what four weeks of agility training delivers.

❤️
A Deeper Bond
Navigating obstacles together demands communication, trust, and teamwork in real time. The connection you build in agility training carries over into every other part of your life together.
🧠
Complete Mental + Physical Workout
Agility engages problem-solving, focus, body awareness, and all-out physical effort simultaneously. One session does more than three neighborhood walks — and you'll see the difference at home.
🏆
Confidence Through Achievement
Watching a hesitant dog charge through a tunnel or clear a jump for the first time is unforgettable. Dogs that complete agility become bolder, more self-assured, and more adaptable in new environments.
🎉
Pure Fun — for Both of You
This is the class where dogs run because they want to, not because they have to. Whether you dream of competition or just want something new and exciting, agility delivers genuine joy.
The curriculum

What You'll Work On in Class

Run, Jump, Conquer covers the essential building blocks of agility — taught progressively so both you and your dog build skills and confidence together each week.

Jumps & Wraps

Learn precise jump technique and how to guide your dog into tight wraps around jump stanchions — the foundation of smooth, efficient agility handling.

Tunnel Navigation

Build confident, enthusiastic tunnel performance — including curved tunnels and entries from multiple angles. Most dogs discover they love this one.

Handling Techniques & Crosses

Introduction to the core handling moves — front crosses, rear crosses, and blind crosses — that let you direct your dog efficiently through sequences.

Send-Outs & Directional Control

Teach your dog to take obstacles independently while you direct from a distance — a key skill for faster, more fluid agility runs.

Specialized Equipment Intro

First exposures to the tire jump and weave poles — introduced at a pace that builds enthusiasm and sets the stage for future success.

Dog Walk Introduction

Confident, controlled navigation of the dog walk contact obstacle — with emphasis on safety, proper performance, and a running or stopped contact.

"I honestly had my doubts that she would ever be able to go for a walk with us, stop barking at strangers, or basically listen to us in general — but they proved me wrong. We got our life back and we are now very proud parents. Best money I ever spent."

German Shepherd · Oakland County
★★★★★

"This is the first time we've left a training and been able to see that okay, this is actually working this time. We have tools, we have ways to manage him. It's been unlike any other experience we've had thus far."

Duke's owner
Australian Shepherd · Metro Detroit
★★★★★

"They give the training more to you than the dog — they teach you with your dog. It's definitely worth at least having the conversation at a free discovery session. I have seen results and we are only halfway through."

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — dogs need to demonstrate basic obedience (sit, down, stay, and place) before joining agility class. This isn't just a formality: agility requires your dog to take direction from you while excited and distracted. Dogs that haven't established these foundations tend to struggle, and it's not fair to the rest of the class. If you're working with us through private training or group obedience and your dog has solid basics, your trainer can approve you directly. Not sure if your dog qualifies? Book a free discovery call and we'll assess together.
Dogs must be sociable with other canines and comfortable in active environments to join agility class. The setting is energetic — dogs are moving, there's equipment everywhere, and it's busier than a standard obedience class. Dogs with significant anxiety or reactivity may be better served with additional private work first. If you're unsure where your dog stands, book a free call and describe what you're seeing — we'll give you an honest answer about readiness.
Any breed, any mix, any size — 6 months and older. Agility is often associated with Border Collies and fast herding breeds, but dogs of all shapes and sizes compete and excel. Small dogs have their own jump height divisions. Large breeds do great with proper foundation work. What matters is enthusiasm, basic obedience, and a dog that's physically healthy enough for the activity.
Not at all. Agility is for dog owners of all ages, fitness levels, and physical abilities. The handler's job is primarily to direct the dog through positioning and cues — not to run obstacle courses themselves. Many handlers modify their movement to fit their comfort level, and the class is taught with that flexibility built in. The dog does the jumping; you do the directing.
Graduates of Agility Fundamentals can continue into Canine Crossovers: The Next Challenge — our intermediate agility class where dogs begin working through sequences, more complex handling, and more advanced obstacle combinations. Many owners find that one class is enough to spark a serious new hobby. Whether you stay recreational or start dreaming about competition, there's a next step available.
